With Halloween around the corner, I thought it would be a great excuse for a recipe with a ghoulish theme. No pumpkins here…not black cats and, hey, no black or orange in sight. Instead, I want am putting a spin of the classic Bloody Mary (that’s creepy…right?) and making it a tad more spooky with a green hue and a frightful kick of Ghost and Scorpion pepper hot sauce!Read More
Happy national tequila day, muchachos! I love me a national spirit day, because what’s better than a social obligation to imbibe and better yet have a theme around it? For this oh, so sacred of holidays I have decided to steer clear of the typical sweet and lime-laden drinks that tequila usually finds itself thrown into and opt for a savoury, garden fresh concoction.Read More
Want the perfect refreshing accompaniment to any Peruvian lunch? Then you must include Chicha Morada. This is a non-alcoholic drink made from purple corn, pineapple, apple and spices that is mildly flavoured and refreshing.Read More
It may seem a bit odd for me to be posting a refreshing, vibrant, ostentatiously summery drink in the dead of winter, but with the scant hours of daylight and dipping temperatures, I for one need a little taste of summer to ward off the winter blues.Read More
Although it sounds like an ‘in your face’ drink, the Sazerac is as much about aroma as it is about taste. The absinthe lined glass and lemon twist are herbaceous and fresh while the rye adds spiciness making it a level and highly enjoyable tipple. The Sazerac itself is elegantly simple. It contains few, good quality ingredients and a ritual of preparation that borders on the reverent.Read More
Happy Friday y’all! We have come to the close of another long week, and nothing says Friday like a new cocktail. Here I’ve gone ‘orange forward’ using rich citrus flavour and a dash of Dillon’s Pear Bitters to make a vitamin C packed tipple that I sure think will keep any seasonal colds at bay. Paired with a wintery rosemary simple syrup, this will do ya better than a flu shot. **Not medical advice!!! Get your damn flu shot – just enjoy this afterwards!Read More
Ahh, the Pisco Sour. A tangy, refreshing cocktail that tastes like a whisky sour meets a margarita meets a key lime pie. Delicious.
The Pisco Sour is the national drink of two South American countries, Peru and Chile and each country claims the drink as their own creation.
I know I have had many a delicious Pisco Sour before but my fondest memory was on my last trip to Peru for a family wedding. On our first night in, despite the late hour my cousins escorted me to Huaringas, a popular and long-standing bar in Lima that claims to have the best Pisco Sour in the country, and boy was it spectacular: acidic, creamy and subtly floral from the Pisco. They had the classic of course as well as many blended with exotic jungle fruits from the Amazon like aguaymanto, maca, maracuya and more.Read More
Happy Canada Day fellow Canucks! To celebrate Canada’s 148th birthday I mixed up a batch of good ol’ sangria with a Canadian twist! What makes it Canadian you say? Well, I’m glad you asked! In this brew I used 100 per cent VQA Canadian wine (hey, Canada has some great wine!), some tart seasonal fruit and of course Canadian whisky – and it’s whisky without an ‘e’ so its legit Canadian, eh!Read More
